March Of Dimes
As part of Shelby, Lara and my state officer project, I have chosen March Of Dimes as my disease/illness to educate and
fundraise for.
March of Dimes is an organization dedicated to helping raise money to advocate, educate, and research birth defects.
Fundraising –
I have found lots of ideas on how students can fundraise for this –
Dime Collection – Students can set cans around their schools and hold competitions to see who can raise the most dimes.
Classes, school organizations, sports teams, etc., can compete to see who can raise the most dimes.
Hold a dodge ball tournament – Charge $5 to be put on a team, and hold a round-robin tournament. Charge $1 admission for
spectators, and hold a bake sale or concession stand to raise extra money. Make sure your school (And also your town!) know
whats going on, and encourage everyone to join a team. You can also have basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, etc.,
tournaments instead.
Light up your school in pink and blue – Talk to your principal to get the okay, and then decorate your school in pink and blue to
raise awareness about March of Dimes. Organize an assembly and speak about the increasing number of premature babies,
and what can be done to prevent it. Also, posters can be put up to increase awareness of this organization even more.
Educate –
There are many ways to educate your school and community about this campaign
Talk to your school – If there is a child development class, or other class that focuses on familes and babies, speak to them
about the importance of folic acid consumption, and increase their awarness about the growing number of premature births.
Organize a booth at a community event. Educate people about March of Dimes and what its mission is. Display visual aids that
show the size of a premature baby, distribute pamphlets, or pink and blue wristbands
Download videos that have teens speaking about what smoking, drinking, and doing drugs could do to babies they may have in
the future. You can download this videos at marchofdimesyouth.com/videos/index.asp
Prematurity Awareness Month is November, so that would be a great time to organize an educational activity and fundraise for
this organization.
Educate and Fundraise
Check out the Two Week Fun-Raising plan and try to do as many of the activities as you can throughout the two weeks.
Visit www.marchofdimes.com/youth for more activities, ideas, and information.
Guidelines – Compete one or more activities. You can pick what they are or how you do them. Take pictures!!

EDUCATION:.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that
affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to
the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the
motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively
affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
This is the basics about ALS. Do a little research about this disease. It will interest you, trust me. Then simply just educate others.
FUNDRAISE:
There are many different ideas for fundraising. BE CREATIVE! Here are some examples that I have done.
• Walk 2 D’feet ALS (create a walk for your school or community)
• Do something with the color red. This color represents FCCLA and ALS.
• Ask local businesses for a donation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Search in your community for anyone who has this disease. Help them out with this deadly disease. Everything you do to help means
so much to the families suffering from this.
*WYOMING FCCLA I CHALLENGE YOU TO HELP SAVE A LIFE… THIS COULD BE AFFECTING YOU SOMEDAY!*
Lara's Project
You need to decide on a illness that has affected you and your community and do these three categories in your
school or community.
Education: Find some fun way to educate you class or school on awareness and prevention. HAVE FUN WITH IT!!
Make a fun power point for your FCS class or hold a pep rally for your school and educate while throwing in some
fun activities. For example do an exercise/nutrition activity to tie in with prevention. Or act out a skit whether funny
or serious. Your can also bring in statistics and/or get a speaker to help you out. You need to do your own research
to present the education section.
Fundraiser: If you choose to do Cancer there are tons upon tons of organizations you can team up with. Two of my
favorites are relay for life and race for a cure. One benefit with relay for life is most of the time it includes education,
fundraising, and patient services which are the three categories you need to finish for this state officer project.
Extra info: If you would like to start a relay for life or get some more information about it call me, go to relay.com, or
contact Jill Duval at (307)638-4101 or Jill.Duval@cancer.org.
Patient Services/hands on help: You have educated people and you have fundraised to help find a cure. Now take
a step further and go and reach out to someone who might be suffering from this disease. Do something special
and out of the ordinary for them. Then take an extra step and keep in contact with that person or people you have
meet. One example is to make some fun beanies or caps and take to patients at a close by hospital. This would
help their self esteem about their loss of hair from chemo. Or maybe go and during Christmas sing Christmas carols
to the patients then takes Christmas cards and get to know them. See what they have to face from day to day.
Deadline: March 1
What you need to do: To present this you need to make some type of visual aid whether it be a PowerPoint, a
poster board, or a binder/scrapbook. Then have one or two people represent your chapter to help explain what
you have done. Present this at state. Be able to give a short explanation to send to us on March 1 on what you
have done.
Contact info: My contact info for question is (307)421-3701 or e-mail me at parli_baby_08-09@live.com. I would
love to hear comments or question. When you are finished you are going to need to contact Robin, Shelby, and I,
so we all know what is going on... Thanks so much!!
